Break Away: Lucky Wilds Slot Review

Break Away: Lucky Wilds Slot Big Image

Stormcraft Studios and Microgaming can make a good team, and we see this in the slot machines that this partnership has produced lately. Break Away: Lucky Wilds is the latest game that has been launched as a result, and it continues a fairly popular series from Microgaming, which revolves around the game of hockey. The original slot was launched in 2012 by Microgaming, the sequel came in 2019 from Stormcraft Studios, and 2020 is bringing us yet another title for the series, one that retains the excellent design and adds plenty of features and bigger payouts. Overall, a lot to get excited about.

Break Away: Lucky Wilds is going to have 5x5 reels and 88 paylines, which is the same as the others. Where big improvements were made, is in the payout potential of the slot, now going as high as 11,363x the stake, or up to $100,000 cash. They’ve basically tripled the game’s potential, and they’ve kept the volatility high and the RTP at 96.89%, so I don’t find much to complain about here. With Rolling Reels, Super Stacked Wilds, Smashing Wilds feature, scatter symbols, three types of free spins with multipliers and Growing Wilds, this is an absolute beast of a game.

Break Away: Lucky Wilds Betting and Prizes

Though it doesn’t offer the biggest betting range around, Break Away: Lucky Wilds needs to cover 88 lines, and so the starting point is not that low, at $0.88. The upper limit is only going to get to $8.80 per spin, at which point you’d wager $0.10 per line.

The previous game of the series only had rewards of up to 3,181x the stake to pay, but Lucky Wilds more than triples that, to 11,363x the stake. Now, the difference is that the cap is lower, now going only up to $100,000, but the maximum bet is five times smaller as well. Overall, the increase in potential is excellent, even though the volatility has likely increased further.

Another very good payout that this game can deliver, is the Grand Jackpot, along with smaller variants, Major and Minor. The big one offers up to 3,850x the stake, at random, and the more wilds you collect during a spin, the better the odds of this coming your way.

This was already a game with High volatility, but I like that they kept the above average RTP, at 96.89%.

Slot Features

Quite a few features will be present in this game, for you to enjoy and take advantage of, but the basic way of forming combinations remains. You need matching symbols appearing left to right, on one of the 88 active lines, spread across 5x5 reels.

If you do form a winning combination, the Rolling Reels get to trigger once you get paid, so that they can bring new symbols and replace the winning ones. If new combinations form then, the Rolling Reels retrigger. This can go on for quite a bit.

Super Stacked Wilds, found on the reels 2, 3 and 4, will be a constant presence during both paid and free spins, with the latter getting even bigger variants. You just use these as substitutes, nothing more, but they can still have a major impact.

Wild symbols can also make an appearance via a feature called Smashing Wilds. It will trigger at random, and will give you one of the middle reels as a full wild, for that spin and any Rolling Reels that may follow.

Should the free spins trigger, via 3+ scatters with the Flaming Puck, you get three versions for this feature. You unlock the more volatile options in time though, after triggering the feature 5 and 10 times, respectively.

You start off with the version that has 18 free spins, a starting multiplier of 1x, and a maximum one of 8x (for Rolling Reels). There are also Growing Wilds, where the stacked wilds get bigger by 1 position each round.

You then get access to the version with 12 free spins, multipliers from 2x to 18x, and increasing wild stacks by 2 symbols.

The third version has only 6 free spins, but multipliers go from 3x to 28x, and the Growing Wilds get bigger by 3 positions per spin.

Theme & Design

If you’ve played the previous slots of the series, then the hockey theme of Break Away: Lucky Wilds shouldn’t come as a surprise. The slot still relies on its 2012 graphics, which have held surprisingly well. Only themed symbols have been implemented, with players from two teams, goalies, referees, as well as logos and various pieces of equipment.

Conclusion

Break Away: Lucky Wilds should be a must pick for someone that enjoyed the rest of the series, and it can work out great for other players as well. They just need to have a bit of a tolerance to pain, as the slot’s high volatility is required in order to get you potential rewards of up to 11,363x the stake.

All in all, I consider this to be an improvement over the previous release, which was already pretty good.
