deadmau5 Slot Review
Microgaming has a regular collection of branded slot machines, and many of them are built around big names, like Playboy Gold or Game of Thrones, to mention a couple of their popular titles. With deadmau5, they went for another type of brand, one associated with a Canadian DJ, much more likely to appeal to a younger audience, something that they would definitely appreciate. The game that they came up with, relies on several features that are fairly common in Microgaming’s collection, graphics are good enough without being great, and the RTP disappoints. All in all, they certainly could’ve done better.
5x3 reels are available in deadmau5, and there will be 243 ways to win active, so all you need is for matching symbols on several consecutive reels, to get paid. Unfortunately, that doesn’t guarantee that you will have a good time in a slot machine, and the odds can be even lower in deadmau5, as the RTP is at a below average 95.22%, volatility is high, and yet top payouts don’t go higher than 2,100x the stake. Since the game has up to 10x multipliers to apply, it hurts even more that the rewards can’t be better. Rolling reels, the aforementioned multipliers, free spins and wilds, those will all help a bit as you play the game.
deadmau5 Betting and Prizes
$0.20 to $100 is fairly standard, as far as slot machine betting is concerned. You pick the amount that you can afford to spend per spin, and that’s it.
A good top payout generally needs to take the amount of risk involved with the game, but it still needs to be motivating for players. For a slot machine with high volatility, such as this one, we’re not impressed with a 2,100x top jackpot, which we’re being promised inside.
A 95.22% RTP is mentioned, another disappointing figure, which tells us that long-term the odds of getting a profit are lower than in most modern titles.
When winning combinations form, which is something that will happen for about 1 in 3 spins, there will be a Rolling Reels feature triggered. Removing the winning positions, the game allows a new wave of symbols to land, and that can end up bringing more combinations and even more rolls.
There will be wilds here, those showing a Wild logo underneath the game logo, but not on all reels. These show up on the middle three columns, and can be used in any new combinations formed, being substitutes for regular icons only.
Wilds can also be added to one of the middle reels at random, through the feature called Drop the Wild. The downside with it is that it removes the ability to triggering Rolling Reels for that spin.
As for free spins, these can be triggered with the help of 3, 4 or 5 scatters, where the game delivers 15, 20 or 25 free spins, respectively. Prizes from 5x to 250x the stake also get paid.
A Multiplier Trail gets added, an improvement for the game, which boosts wins obtained during the Rolling Reels mechanic. The initial spin still pays 1x, but the following rolls take it up to 2x first, then to 3x for the second roll, 4x for the third, 5x for the fourth, and 10x for the fifth and any that come after that.
Theme & Design
As a slot machine which is branded and themed around deadmau5, the obvious techno music and dancing influence on its graphics can be observed. You have five women dancing in the slot’s top symbols, and then there are also scatters and wilds to use when triggering features. The symbols of lower value incorporate the four card suits, which are made out of Neon outlines.
It’s not a great design, which perhaps you might’ve expected from a slot machine in which they’re sinking a lot of money, but it’s not unpleasant either. They could’ve done a lot better when adding in themed graphics though, as there is only a logo to remind you about the deadmau5 connection.
I think that deadmau5 is an OK game, and that’s true only if you are a fan of the DJ, and you want to play his branded slot machine. Otherwise, it’s way below what other slots will offer you these days, both when it comes to top jackpots and RTP. The graphics don’t help it stand out either, they’re average at best.
