Reel Gems is advertised as a slot machine with a gemstone theme, something that isn’t exactly special in this day and age. Microgaming could’ve went with a more original title here, but based on what we’re seeing it gives the impression of being an older title of theirs, or at least that’s the kind of design it has. The features used inside are all modern though, from the use of 243 ways to win, to the Respin buttons placed under the reels, to wilds, scatters, free spins and 3x multipliers. The game’s symbols are predictable, relying on gemstones and poker cards, all of them quite ugly. The top prize can bring you $120,000.
Betting and Prizes
As is the case in pretty much all slots with ways to win, paylines are still used for wagers, and in this case they went with 25 lines which are fixed. You can use up to 250 coins per spin, with 10 coins per line. The value of the coins goes up to $1, so the maximum bet is valued at $250. The minimum one is at $0.25.
The Diamond is going to reward you best, offering a 4,000x payout, which can turn into 40,000 coins, or $40,000 cash. This triples during free spins, so you can get $120,000 during that feature.
Reel Gems Slot Features
The Reel Gems Logo is the wild, and as is to be expected you can use it to form combinations, should it land on a payline that needs its help. You only get wilds on the reels 2 and 4, so it’s far from being as useful as in other games. Wilds don’t replace scatters here.
Free spins are triggered whenever 3 or more Diamond Ring scatters appear in the game. The symbols have to appear at the same time, but the game doesn’t care if they’re not on the same payline. You will be rewarded with 1x to 100x the wager value, and you will also get 15 free spins, where all the wins are tripled, even the top jackpot.
A very special feature, which is present in some of the recent Microgaming releases, the Respin button is used by the player to respin only one reel, the aim being to complete a combination that’s missing one symbol, or to improve an existing one. Each reel has its own button underneath, and after the initial spin is over you can click on it, as long as you’re willing to pay the price that is mentioned there.
Theme & Design
The big disappointment in the Reel Gems slot is related to the design. The theme is clear, based on gemstones, and the rest of the icons are simple poker cards, stock images which are part of lots of games in this exact form. If it was for the design alone, I’d suggest you stay away from it.
The big downside, the design, might make plenty of players to ignore this game. If you can stand it, you might find that the prizes and features make up for that part.
