The most recent slot machine to grace us with its presence, at Microgaming casinos, is going to be Romanov Riches. It’s going to be inspired by early 20th century Russian monarchs and their family, which have been overthrown from power by the rise of communism in Russia. It’s a famous story, and one which has often been associated with riches that they’ve hidden or left behind, so it makes for a good slot machine as well.
First of all, you have 5 reels inside, and there are 15 active lines for combinations to form on. A top win in this game can pay back 1,000x the stake, so expect for a jackpot of $100,000 to be possible. As for the important features that the game mentions, there will be wilds, bonus wheels via scatters and mystery symbols.
Betting and Prizes
Your bet in Romanov Riches does have to cover all the available lines, but it doesn’t have to be high value. You can get away with a small bet, of just $0.20, but you can also spend as much as $100 each round if you want to. This gives the player the option to wager at most $5 per line.
Payout wise, there are several ways for you to win big, though there are plenty of examples of games which pay even more. The best possible outcome is a 1,000x the stake reward, coming via the bonus wheel feature, which would pay up to $100,000. The next best thing is filling up a screen with high paying symbols, which can mean 750x the stake, or $75,000.
The simplest feature available will be the wild symbol, taking the form of a Snowflake on the reels. You have it as the substitute usually, which means that it can be used in combination with other types of symbols, and it will make new wins possible.
The stacked mystery symbol is another part of the game that’s been introduced, though not quite in an ideal form. You get these stacked mystery symbols on all reels, and they can have big potential, but you can get a different resulting symbol on each reel that has it. Only the first two reels are guaranteed to have the same resulting symbol from their mystery stacks.
Re-spins may occur, as a result of the mystery stacks appearing on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost column. The involved reels lock, and only the remaining ones re-spin.
The Bonus icon also comes stacked, and you need 3 or more to get access to the first, second or third wheel. The first two wheels have prizes to give, while the third wheel applies a multiplier. This is the point where you could reach a 1,000x the stake jackpot.
Theme & Design
The Romanov family theme is one that many will love, provided that it’s well implemented. It doesn’t seem to be in this case, as Microgaming chose a focus on their valuable gemstones, rather than on the members of the family. Since they also added a mix of Royals to the paytable, the resulting game area doesn’t look that interesting. As with most Microgaming slots, it’s a perfectly decent game to play, just not one that will impress.
Romanov Riches has several features that got my attention, and it’s a modern game for sure, but the theme had potential for more and Microgaming didn’t take advantage of it.
