Microgaming, through its MPN division, just completed the Universal Championship of Poker, the 2017 edition, and the winner has been crowned in the person of Simon Jones. He’s now carrying the title of Greatest Poker Player, and it’s covering the entire Universe apparently.
The 2017 edition has had a total of €750,000 in guaranteed prizes, with a total of 59 events being organized in September. There was actually an increase of €250,000 in guaranteed prizes, compared to the 2016 edition. The prize pools got to a total of €810,000 this year, and so it’s the largest UCOP as of right now.
The title of Greatest Poker Player was determined through a special leaderboard, which had guaranteed prizes of €10,000. The one that took home the top prize of €5,000 was Simon Jones, which is a sports psychology lecturer and professional poker player.
Simon Jones declared that he didn’t intend at first to play through the entire UCOP series, but he’d been doing quite well on MPN in the last few months. He had decided to give it a shot though, and he managed to do well a couple of times, finishing in 3rd place and reaching top 5 on a few other occasions. The top spot was won with help from a win of €5,400 which was obtained during the 32nd event. He’s feeling great about winning the trophy and he actually really wanted it.
As for Microgaming, they congratulated Simon on being the winner of 2017 and the current holder of this title.
