Microgaming has just released its newest slot machine, and one of their biggest projects in 2017, The Phantom of the Opera. The slot machine benefits from an original musical score and it is inspired by the 2004 film adaptation which proved highly successful, with a total amount grossed worldwide of more than $154 million.
The slot is featuring 5x3 reels with 243 ways and it is inspired by the film’s characters and its music. The characters are actually the game’s higher paying symbols and they can make an appearance in double stacked form. They haven’t neglected the lower paying symbols either, so they’re inspired by the brand.
This is a feature rich game, which offers multiple bonuses that are inspired by the story. One of these is called The Letter Bonus and it is inspired by the letters which the theatre’s new owners are getting from The Phantom, detailing the demands that he makes. This bonus feature will deliver a cash prize of a random value, when the right symbol appears on the 5th reel.
The Chandelier Bonus is also offered and it is based on a well known scene, which had The Phantom take down a chandelier. The feature is offered in the base game and it triggers at random moments. You will notice the scene become darker, a change in the music and then the laugh of The Phantom during the fall of the chandelier. The result will be that 2-3 reels are going to become wild for that round.
Three more types of features are offered via a selection screen, one that you can reach when a minimum of three scatter symbols are on the reels. You get to pick the bonus feature that you prefer, or you can go with a fourth choice that will make that selection for you, at random. For each of the three features, there is a different musical score and key scene that influence it.
First, you have the option of a bonus game called The Masquerade. In it, you will have three tiers to go through, making picks at each stage. You can win additional picks, you can get cash prizes or you can advance to the next tier. The prizes go up with each tier that you advance to.
Second, you have the free spins option, 10 of them and offered as part of a feature called Music of the Night. There are different extra abilities attached to these spins, including random wilds, extra spins, multipliers or wild reels.
The third feature is called All I Ask of You and it gives you 10 spins for free, plus a Dancing Wilds ability. The wild symbols are represented by Raoul and Christine, and they’re going to move at random between the spins. The feature can also bring you 2x2 wilds and multipliers of up to 3x.
The original announcement regarding the licensing deal that Microgaming has done with The Really Useful Group was made during ICE 2017, back in February. At the time, the announcement was made with opera singers that accompanied it and using a themed bar.
As for the musical that inspired it, Phantom of the Opera, it’s one of the world’s most popular entertainment pieces. It was played in front of more than 140 million spectators, in 166 cities from 35 countries. The estimates speak of approximately $6 billion in earnings so far. The original opening was in 1986, in London, at Her Majesty’s Theatre. It remains popular to this day, more than 30 years later.
