15 years ago, in 2004, Microgaming released the first branded slot machine, under license from Square Enix. The name of the game was Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This new agreement builds on that long history which the companies have together.
The sequel came out in 2008, also via Microgaming, as a result of the huge success of the first game. The second installment in the series was called Tomb Raider: Secret of the Sword.
After more than a decade, we’re going to finally see the third slot machine of the series as well. It will be launched in 2019, and it will be a new slot with Lara Croft in the main role. The developer is going to be Triple Edge Studios, one of the Microgaming partners which creates content for them exclusively.
As for who Lara Croft is, this is one of the most popular video game and movie characters of all times. The first game to feature her was launched in 1996, and in time more than 67 million titles were sold. Lara Croft is the most popular heroine from a video game as a result of this huge success. Movies, merchandise and various other products were created, based on her image, and slot machines were part of that as well.
The new Lara Croft slot machine is going to be unveiled at ICE Totally Gaming, in early 2019.
There were a couple of statements as well, one from the COO of Microgaming, Andrew Clucas, and the other from the Square Enix VP of Licensing, Janet Swallow.
Clucas mentions that they’re very excited to renew the partnership they had with Square Enix, and to have a new slot machine in the Lara Croft world. This is going to be one of their big reveals, which will come at ICE 2019.
Janet Swallow also mentions how Square Enix looks forward to keep working together with Microgaming, in releasing yet another successful online slot machine, after the first two which were launched in 2004 and 2008.
